A few weeks later, Eliza received a letter from Missouri. It said only this:

My Dear Eliza.

I am away from home on some business. I dont know the extent of my stay. I write to say I have heard that the governor calls on you. Whatever comes, I wish you happiness. I have found a girl of my own.

Will.

It was not total absolution, but she could live with her regret. She had Sam Houston.

And Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States. Tennessee was brash with victory. There was the night of the illumination, when every home in Gallatin and every house in Nashville but two was lit through the night with tapers and oil. The dark houses were mobbed, their inhabitants forced to hide in their cellars while the Democrats raged and the band, directed by a man waving a hickory baton, played “The year of Jubilee is come, return ye ransomed people home.” In Madisonville two brave citizens prevented the town from casting a unanimous ticket for the General; they were pursued by Democrats with tar and feathers and hid in the woods until the mayor sent word to the governor and Sam called off the search, threatening to send in the militia.

And it was not in Tennessee only that Democrats were riotous with victory. In Philadelphia drunken Jacksonians stole an empty coffin and went searching for the author of the coffin handbill, intending to bind him and carry him through the streets in it. They smashed his windows and looted his home as he escaped through the back entrance, disguised in his wife’s clothes.

In Washington the people of the passing administration locked their doors and were not seen in the streets.

But in December, two days before Christmas, the rejoicing in Tennessee turned to mourning.
